The United States seems to have made it a point to assess the diversities in the country and cater to every section of the society. In the first large scale survey that was conducted by the National Health Interview Survey in July 2014, 1.6 percent of the population identified themselves as gays or lesbians. Besides, 0.7 percent Americans were identified as bisexuals.
According to an independent poll, about 3.4 percent of American adults were identified as belonging to the LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender) community. In 2011, the William institute report also stated at 8.2 percent of American adults claimed to have engaged in some form of same sex behavior. On the other hand, about 11 percent reported to have same sex attraction.
It is also believed that online surveys not only witness a greater degree of participation but also yields more authentic information, courtesy of the anonymity it offers. With the legalization of same sex marriages in the United States, people have become open about the sexuality and no longer hesitate to reveal their sexual orientation. On June 26, 2015 the Supreme Court made gay marriages legal nationwide.
According to a survey conducted in 2005, about 15.4 percent of the population of San Francisco was reported as belonging to the LGB community. Other popular states on the list included Dallas, Chicago and New York City where 7 percent, 5.7 percent and 4.5 percent of population claimed to belong to the LGB community.
Change in mindset
The Gen Z has accepted homosexuality with open arms. They have acknowledged the fact that homosexuality isn’t a person’s choice and it is due to changes in his body that are beyond his control. Therefore, instead of cribbing about it and making a fuss about the entire thing, people have gracefully homosexuals as part of the community and the government bodies have reciprocated this.
The role played by local LGBT activists and dating site
Local activists have played a crucial role in making people understand that homosexuality isn’t by choice. As a matter of fact, people don’t choose a sexual orientation. Specific changes in the gene structure along with subtle changes in the brain contribute to this. The stigma attached to homosexuality has dissolved over the years and activists continue to educate the society, making them more informed about it.
Specialist dating sites for gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgender singles have brought about a revolution in the society, thereby enabling people to get in touch with like – minded people and seek support. After legalization of same sex marriages, the importance of these sites has grown manifold, which have acted as a platform for communication between people hailing from all walks of life.
It can now be said that the statistics are more accurate than it was earlier as people are no longer shy to speak about their sexual orientation.
